TIME TO RECYCLE THE FORMAL DINING ROOM?

The majority of homeowners say they do not eat their meals in their formal dining rooms.  Many say they eat in their kitchen dining area; others say they eat in the family room or in front of the television.

If you choose to recycle the formal dining room, what do you do with that space?

An option that many are considering is to remove the wall and combine the formal dining room with the kitchen area.  Adding an island or increased seating for family gatherings is another popular choice.  Getting more counter space and more cabinets will add to the functionality of the kitchen too.

Some older homes have a separate, walled-in space for the formal dining room.  But today’s preference is for the open floor plan.  By removing the walls that separate the living room and dining room, you will gain more living space.  Of course, the removal of walls is best left to professionals who are expert in structural changes.

Other options for the transformation of the underused formal dining room include a family room, sitting room, or home office.  The selection that best fits with your family will improve the function of the home.  And you do not have to spend a lot of money.
